The Korolov Zhytomyr Military Institute (KZMI) is a unique higher education institution that trains highly qualified specialists in the operation of complex technical systems, advanced robotic weapons systems, and IT specialists who, upon completion of their studies, continue their service in the structures of military intelligence, electronic warfare and information warfare, cybersecurity, and information security.

The uniqueness of KZMI lies in the fact that it is the only multidisciplinary, inter-service and interagency higher military educational institution in Ukraine that provides training of such specialists not only for all branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (the Land Forces, the Air Force, the Naval Forces, the Air Assault Forces and the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine), but also for other ministries and agencies, in particular for the National Guard of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, the State Space Agency of Ukraine, and others.

Duration of Study at the Military Institute

Cadets of KZMI study for 4 years and obtain “Bachelor’s degree”, and additionally study for 2 years to obtain “Master degree”, with the award of a state-issued diploma, receive the military rank of “Lieutenant”, and are assigned for further service in officer positions in the Armed Forces and other security and defence structures of Ukraine.

Specialties for which training is provided at the Military Institute

Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) specialists are unique professionals in the field of intelligence information technologies. Their work involves obtaining intelligence information by intercepting radio emissions of the enemy’s communication and telecommunication systems, radars and navigation tools, as well as in the information-analytical processing of the obtained data. As a result, the coordinates of enemy objects, troop compositions, and intentions of the enemy are revealed. SIGINT specialists perform their tasks on land, in the air, and at sea, obtaining extremely important information about the enemy. They are the true elite of Ukraine's military intelligence.

Space intelligence specialists are engaged in the analysis of images of the Earth’s surface obtained by means of space systems. Using complex hardware and software systems, they are able to detect the enemy from images that, for an average user, appear to be only ordinary pictures obtained from space. In addition, by applying modern Geographic information systems, space intelligence specialists can predict the actions of the enemy and provide reliable information about its status and location. That is why they are considered the intellectual elite of military intelligence.

Specialists in the control of spacecraft plan satellite missions, control their movement in Earth orbit, receive images at ground stations located on the territory of our country. Using powerful radar and quantum-optical systems, they can detect all space objects, track their movement, and predict possible threats from them. Participating in international programmes, Korolov graduates operate complex ground-based systems, receive information from foreign spacecraft, ensuring continuous observation from space of objects of interest.

Specialists in the control of unmanned aerial vehicles learn to control them and process intelligence information obtained from them. This makes it possible to see what the enemy is doing at a distance in real time, where its positions, equipment, and personnel are located.

Specialists in seismic monitoring conduct surveillance of natural and man-made catastrophic events across the entire globe. They detect powerful explosions, including nuclear explosions, and assess the scale of industrial accidents, magnetic storms, tsunamis, and earthquakes. Their activities are aimed at enhancing the safety of populations living in seismically hazardous regions and ensuring compliance with international nuclear non-proliferation treaties. The seismic monitoring systems operated by our graduates are integrated into the International Monitoring System (IMS), and the specialists themselves participate in international programmes and carry out tasks aimed at improving safety worldwide.

Specialists in information warfare ensure favourable conditions in the information environment for the successful execution of missions by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Their primary tasks include monitoring the information environment, timely identification of information threats to our forces, conducting information and psychological operations against the adversary. They are multi-skilled and versatile specialists capable of using the most advanced software, carrying out analytical processing of information from multiple sources, producing a wide range of media content: photo reports, thematic video materials, television features, radio programmes, leaflets, newspaper articles. The activities of information warfare specialists often go unnoticed, yet the results of their work are highly tangible, as they are directed at the most vulnerable aspects of the adversary.

Specialists in special radio communications are highly qualified professionals who ensure communications during the execution of the most complex and critical intelligence tasks. They carry out covert transmission of information about the enemy, its status and intentions using special low-power radio stations that remain undetectable by enemy electronic detection and jamming systems. Specialists in special radio communications are indispensable where and when traditional means of communication are ineffective or cannot be employed at all.

Information protection specialists ensure the protection of state secrets in military units and institutions of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and other security structures. To this end, they implement modern systems for the protection of documentary information and technologies for its encryption during transmission via communication channels, deploy computer systems capable of withstanding cyberattacks, organize countermeasures against the adversary’s technical intelligence means, take measures to prevent the disclosure of sensitive information. These specialists operate modern systems for processing and transmitting information, countering a wide range of adversary intelligence means – from covert surveillance devices to unmanned aerial vehicles. Information protection specialists are the elite of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, standing guard over state secrets.

Specialists in electromagnetic and cyber warfare ensure the achievement of superiority over the adversary in the electromagnetic spectrum. They disrupt the enemy’s radio systems by means of radio interference. Using modern automated electronic warfare systems, specialists in electromagnetic and cyber warfare disrupt the functioning of the adversary’s radio communication systems and create a false electronic environment for its radars, radionavigation systems, and radio-controlled weapons. At the same time, they create a powerful invisible “electromagnetic shield” over their forces, ensuring electronic protection of all radio systems against detection, jamming, and engagement by the adversary’s homing weapons.

Specialists in electromagnetic and cyber warfare are fighters of the “invisible front” who can ensure victory in battle before it begins.
